Thanks to Col. Mamady Doumbouya for setting the standard, and crucially sending the message against third termism In Africa, by necessary and morally ousting President Alpha Condé to avert rampant corruption, disregard for human rights and economic mismanagement under the ousted president Conde.
The respected colonel, said in a statement, we had little choice but to “give the people their freedom.”
Quoting late Ghanaian ex-president John Rawlings, Mr Doumbouya said, “if the people are crushed by their elites, it is up to the army to give the people their freedom.”
Mr. Alpha Condé became the President of Guinea, elected democratically through the pluralistic election held in 2010, but would go on to become abuse the constitution and become a dictator.
Some African presidents have now made it a habit to subvert and or manipulate – through wrong or ‘legal’ channels to stand for a third term this makes the incumbent manipulating majority party dynamics in an attempt to gain or steal votes during elections .
The continental bodies such as ECOWAS and the African Union (AU) has rightly come under attack for its lack of decisiveness or intervention in countries where the bedrock of nationhood – the constitution – is threatened .
Third termism is a common cancer that is gradually threatening the democracy of Africa .Unfortunately the consequences of such actions are felt mostly by the ordinary citizens. And such power greed decreases investor confidence, increases tension in the country, encourages corruption, militarism and sometimes triggers violence or even civil war.
